Meet Our Calendar Angels!

LA Calendar Motorcycle Show History
The first annual LA Calendar Motorccyle Show actually started out as a backyard BBQ at producer Jim Gianatsis' house in 1991 to celebrate the publication of the 1992 Fast Dates racebike, and first 1992 Mikuni Iron & Lace Calendar with custom bikes and models. One of the calendar models, Playboy Playmate Teri Weigel, actually handled cooking the burgers on the outdoor grill.

The first Mikuni Calendar actually pubished in 1990 with my photo of Playmate Teri Lynn Doss on the cover holding a Mikuni carburetor, and inside the "Mikuni Calendar" featured nude model photography from Penthuse photographer Steven Hicks.
This first Calendar was produced by Gianatsis Design for our client Mikuni to replace the generic stock nude photogrpahy which Mikuni had been buying from Japan, imprinting Mikuni name on it and giving it to distributors as a Christmas present each year.
It was our intention (Gianatsis Design and Mikuni marketing director Lee Chapin) to bring out an origional calendar which incorporated Mikuni carburetor products.

Then the next year, 1991 we decided to produce a Mikuni promotional calendar we could sell to the public and featurd Mikuni carburetors on all the top racing bikes of the era.
The 1991 Mikuni Calendar was photographed in its entirity by myself and included cover model and new Playboy Playmate Pamela Andreson with Miguel Duhamel's Yoshimura Suzuki "Big Poppa" unlimited class Superbike.

In 1992 we movied to Mikuni Calendar premier party to Mikuni American and invited all of the motorcycle media and mikuni distributors to attend, along with the models and big builders.
It was such a great party, I suggested we open it to the public the following year, and weith Mikuni as a 50/50 parter to moved to to the Santa Monica Airport's Museum of Flying

The Mikuni Calendar Motorcycle Show remained and grew at the Sanata Monica Airport through year 1999, but at that point the 1-day Show had become too big for the Museum Facility and the available parking.
And Mikuni Corporation felt the Calendar Show was taking time away from the Carburetior Division's main focus of carburetor development and sales. So Mikuni relinquised its partnership in the Calendar Show to Gianatis Design, and in 2000 the Calendar Show was renamed the Los Angeles Calendar Motorcycle Show and it movedto the Queen Mary Park in Long Beach in association with the Queen Mary Corp. The Queen Mary Park location right on on the Pacific Ocean proved to be an incredible event location for a Motorcycle Show in the hot SoCal in the summer, and in 2001 we expanded the Show to 2-days as it continued to grow.

Mikuni American still remains a Associate Sponsor of the Iron & Lace Calendar, and the Calendar Bike Building Championship at the LA Calendar Motorcycle Show Weekend.

Jim Giuffra / AFT Customs, talks about his 2011 Best of show winner Sentoh -
" I bought a CB750F when I graduated from high school & still have it. The time was right to build a custom. A lot of the details can’t be seen in that picture.Every piece is custom for this bike.

Here are a few of the high points – Our buddy Bryan From TPJ Customs made the perimeter frame & was kind enough to let Cyndi do a little of the TIG welding. Race Tech custom built the shocks using 15 different measurements from the bike. R1 forks with custom trees by our buddy Alan Kraus. We used CRF 450 hubs, foot controls (we modified) And took a CRF 450 K/S & shaft & mated it internally to the 750 mechanism. It has an exposed stator by Cycle X.

All the lighting/instumentation is digital & LED by Clearwater Lights/Grip Ace/Motogadget. The bike is street legal. License plate pivots vertical or horizontal. Steering stabilizer is making a custom bike debut. Some parts are Moto GP prototype ( only 1 in USA) like the remote lever adj from Beringer. Beringer also supplied the Calipers & rotors (super mnoto) & hand controls. It has a Moto Gp quick disconnect front brake line.

The oil tank is the tail piece. Fuel tank holds almost 4 gals. Bars are 1 3/8′ with our Double D risers. We completely went through the engine & added the Wiseco 836 kit & Web Cam. Dynatek provided the ign.system.We wanted to ditch the engine covers phillips screws & go to 8mm head bolts. They don’t make those longer than 45mm that we could find so we had to make our own in lengths above that.

The intake manifold (4 into 1) was probably the hardest piece to make & then the exhaust. We cut the Leo Vince cans down 50% then reassembled them. They lazered the name for us. It weighs 420 with a gal of gas & 4 qts. oil – 10lbs lighter than an 05 R1 Yamaha that we also weighed.

The AFT Girls did most of the sheet metal, welding, engine rebuilding, wheel lacing/trueing and final assembly under my supervision. I like to teach them to do all the labor intensive jobs, then I can just sit back and watch them go to work! I’m very proud of all their hard work & committment to excellance."

The Premier Custom & High Performance Street & Sportbike Show in America!

20th Annual 2011 Los Angeles Calendar Motorcycle Show & Calendar Girl Music Festival
Jim Giuffra and the Girls of AFT Customs make it Five in a Row!
photography by Jim Gianatsis, Pete Alva, Jim Wolf and Candi Mitchell

The Queen Mary Seawalk Village, Long Beach, CA , Saturday July 16th 2011 - The 20th annual Los Angeles Calendar Motorcycle Show presented by Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys, America's premier streetbike event returned to the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA on Saturday July 16th. The legendary event celebrated its 20th Anniversary with a move from it's traditional Queen Mary Event Park location, to dockside next to the historic Queen Mary ocean liner in the exciting Seawalk Village which replicates an old British seaside town for a step back in history. The move to the new, smaller venue was a reflection of the economy which has has impacted the streetbike market hard the last few years. The move proved to be a big success with both the fans, and some 60 companies and top name builders participating this year.

LA Calendar Motorccyle Show photos

Making history this year was builder Jim Giuffra and the beautiful spokes models of AFT Customs / www.AFTcustoms.com who created not one, but two all-new customs bikes to premier at this year's Calendar Show Bike Building Championship. The 4-time consecutive Best of Show and Metric Class winners were back to try and retain their titles and they did. Their very unique and original 1970 Honda CB750 based custom sportbike named "Sentoh" featured a hand built perimeter frame, a single Mikuni HSR45 carb fed 4-tract induction system, hand made exhaust and kickstart system and modern RaceTech racebike suspension and Beringer brakes. Sentoh emerged out of the Sportbike Class, amid fierce completion from the other classes including Pro Builder, to take 2011 Best of Show and give AFT Customs their 5th consecutive Calendar Show win. Click to see the AFT Sentoh featured in the Calendar Bike Garage.

Hiroyuki Hirate 1st Place Pro BuilderJim Gianatsis congratulates Hiroyouki Hirato, who flew in from Japan, on his Pro Builder Class win.

Garnering 1st Place in the top Pro Builder Class was new comer Hiroyouki Hirata of BB Custom Factory / www.Custom-BB.com in Hiroshima, Japan. He flew in with his bike just for the Calendar Show, and like his own bike building idol Shinya Kimura did 6 years ago to confirm his reputation in the world of custom bike building, Hirata has now firmly established himself also as one of the world's premier custom bike builders. His bike is based off a 1990 Harley FLHTC and then was fully modified to the theme of "Japanese Culture".

LACalendar Motorcycle Show

The other custom bike premiered this year by AFT was 'Azumati' - a VT750 Bobber/Street tracker being built on commission for the Jackson Rancheria Indian Casino. Asumati is a Miwuk Indian word meaning grizzly bear, the monarch of the forest. In Miwuk stories the bear is a symbol of great strength and courage. This bike is fierce with a Yamaha R1 front end, Race Tech Piggyback Rear Shocks, a hidden radiator, CR450 front hub and brake. It took 2nd Place in Pro Builder behind Hirita.

The new Seawalk venue proved to be a just as exciting being packed to the fences with a huge turnout of manufactures, vendors, top name Calendar Bike Builders including Todd Silicato / ToddsCycle.com, the West Coast premier of the new Motus Motorcycles V-4 Sport and Sport Touring model bikes, SoCal's top Sportbike Clubs hosted by Pyrate Ryders' Rick Mitchell, and thousands of spectators. Included was the Calendar Girl Music Festival with its traditional beautiful girl fronted bands including the Show's Master of Ceremonies Emily Jaye with her band Frentik, the Barb Wire Dolls with Isis Queen, and New York signer songwriter Natalie Gelman.

Kristen Renton and Chopper the Biker Dog

Special celebrity appearances included Sons of Anarchy cast members Emilio Rivera and Kristen Renton, plus Chopper the Dog with Dark Alley Customs promoting the Tazzy Animal Rescue Fund / www.tazzyfund.org.

Calendar Kitten

The Calendar Show is produced by famed motorsports and fashion photographer photographer Jim Gianatsis of the well known Los Angeles based motorsports advertising and marketing agency Gianatsis Design Associates. The Show celebrates each year's premier each year of the new FastDates.com Motorcycle PinUp Calendars photographed by Jim, which include this year's 2012 Fast Dates World Superbike, Iron & Lace Custom Motorcycles, and Garage Girls Calendars. Beautiful World Superbike Calendar Kitten Camilla was there to meet the fans and posed non-stop all day long for photos, as did beautiful actress Kristen Renton.

Extra Virgin TV Show filming Food Channel

Adding to the excitement was TV's Food Network which was there to film an episode of "Extra Virgin" a half hour Italian cooking show with actress Debi Mazar and her Italian husband Gabriele Corcos, both of whom are hard-core motorcycle enthusiasts. Gabriele actually road to the Show in full roadracing leathers aboard his own Ducati Hypermoto. And one of their TV programs this season included the couple taking a motorcycle trip across Tuscany, Italy, to enjoy the food of the region. At the Calendar Show the couple prepared a wonderful picnic lunch on the grass lawn among the Contest Bikes, then they shared the lunch on camera with many of the celebrities at the Calendar Show.

Kristen Rention, Chopper the Dog

New Lower $20 spectator admission this year, as always included the Calendar Motorcycle Show with its Calendar Bike Building Championship, celebrity Bike Builders, leading Manufacturers, Vendors, the Calendar Girl Music Festival and all-day admission to the famed Queen Mary Ghost Ship with the Saturday Night Builder's Party in the Queen's Observation Bar. Spectators also get complimentary admission aboard the historic Queen Mary Ghost Ship, and entry to the Saturday Night Iron & Lace Calendar Builders Party with a live band in the ship's Observation Bar. Exhibitor display and Vendor prices were also reduced by Jim Gianatsis to help industry partners in the current economy.

AFT bike build for LA Calednar Motorcycle Show

AFT Customs will be premiering two new customs at this year's Calendar Show. "'Senthoh' is based on a 1975 Honda CB750 SOHC,  my first streetbike in high school and the first bike I ever customized, " explains Giuffra. "The name in Japanese means 'beginning' both for me as a builder back then, and for the AFT girls today. I'm keeping the bike's specification quiet for now, but I will tell you it is a cafe racer."

"Our second bike premiering is named 'Azumati' - its a VT750 Bobber/Street tracker being built on commission for the Jackson Rancheria Indian Casino. Asumati is a Miwuk Indian word meaning grizzly bear, the monarch of the forest. In Miwuk stories the bear is a symbol of great strength and courage. This bike will be just as fierce with a Yamaha R1 front end, Race Tech Piggyback Rear Shocks, a hidden radiator, CR450 front hub and brake."
