Left page: The video cart station in Josh’s studio includes his camera tethered to studio
video monitors and a lap top computer where he can test, check and adjust his camera
settings and the studio lighting for each shot. He has a full-time assistant to monitor and
adjust all the camera and software setting for the shoot, and other assistants for makeup,
hair, wardrobe, lighting, reflectors and a fan for wind blown hair, and a studio manager to
handle them all, so Josh can just focus on working with the models. And of course, here is
our beautiful red-haired Italian Calendar Kitten Sophie Francesconi!
Above: Here Josh Ryan (black shirt) leads a discussion with the models in studio, on the
first day of our seminar shoot at his Issue Studio in West Hollywood. We discussed every-
thing from how to find and book models, creating and using “mood boards” to show then
what type of pictures you’d like to take so they are comfortable with it, negotiating prices,
and how to direct them in the studio during the shoot, to even sharing the shoot for
mutual promotional purposes.
We got to shoot with 6 different models each day, in 6 different sets, and a different
location each day. The first day’s shot was at Issue Studio, and the 2nd day would be a
the iconic Goldstein Residence in the Hollywood Hills. The purpose of shooting a total of
12 different models in 12 different sets was to give each participant photographer a
complete portfolio of models, looks and locations.
Right: Two beautiful models shoot by Josh at his Issue Studio for the Honey Birdette
lingerie advertising campaign.
