The Goldstein Residence
Josh Ryan Photo Workshop Day 2
The second day of our Josh Ryan photo workshop took us
to the iconic Sheats-Goldstein Residence in the Hollywood Hills with
six new beautiful models to photograph.
The Sheats–Goldstein Residence is a home designed and
built from 1961-1963 by American architect John Lautner. The home
was conceived from the inside out and built into the sandstone ledge
of the hillside; a dwelling that opens to embrace nature and view.
James Goldstein, a business man, purchased the residence
in 1972, in a state of some disrepair. He recommissioned Lautner
and others to renovate it over the years, adding a rooftop tennis
court next door and his own nightclub underneath, the appropriately
titled Club James.
In 2016, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)
announced that James Goldstein has entrusted the home and its
surrounding estate in a promised gift to the institution.
Above: Club James, a separate structure featuring a
discothque, huge outdoor party and pool area, and a tennis court on
top. The original house is hidden in the tropical vegetation to the right.
Right: The original Residence with its sloped concrete ceiling
and a deck pool view overlooking Hollywood and the Pacific Ocean.
