Riding Day 5,: Parghelia to Calabria, then by Ferry to Taormina / Sicily -239km / 149 Miles
After our overnight stay in Pargjelia, that morning we continued to follow the Italian western coastal road, heading south towards the tip of the Italian 'Boot" to catch the ferry crossing in Calabria over to the island of Sicily. But first we stopped for lunch at a restaurant on the beach in Scila, a picturesque old coastal town with an old castle overlooking the sea with a small boat harbor on one side, and the beach on the other. Again, the beach town was deserted this time of the year, so we had the town and the beach virtually to ourselves! Before joining our group for lunch, I too my bike for a quick ride around town and over to the fishing dock to take pictures. It would have been nice to visit the Scila fortress atop the big rock, but there was never enough time in the day.
