Los Angeles Downtown Arts District, CA - Saturday September 18th 2021 - The Outlier’s Guild Moto Show 2021 returned to the DTLA Downtown Los Angeles Arts District for its long-anticipated 4th annual 1-day Saturday motorcycle show after a 1-year hiatus in 2020 due to the Covid shutdowns. The Moto Show is staged in vacant warehouses in the once rundown, now being revitalized area of downtown Los Angeles along the west side of the concrete lined Los Angeles River basin, the scene of countless Hollywood TV shows and movies including the moto-themed Grease, Terminator, The Marlboro Man and In Time.

The OG Show is one of many new generation bike events that have sprung up more recently in urban centers across America since the 2008 Recession which put most traditional V-twin biker shows and custom bike manufacturers out of business. These new generation shows attract the city dwelling New Millennials who like the old school café racer look of bikes based on any motorcycle brand or model year. You’ll find few V-Twin customs or baggers in the bunch, but rather budget built ‘60s Hondas and Triumphs brought back from the shed (or dead) and revived as trendy daily rides, all the way up to artisan crafted museum show pieces that may never roll down a road, but will be displayed with pride in some Hollywood movie actor’s living room or a corporate attorney’s office.
Cafe Racers and New Millennials in Black Leather Jackets
The Outlier's Guild Moto Show is an annual motorcycle event located in Downtown Los Angeles, now in its 4th year, featuring select Cafe' Racer, Bobber, Classic, Tracker, Scrambler, Old School Chopper, Modern Classic, Brat and full custom motorcycles on display in a unique setting. The OG Show is the vision of Jay LaRossa of Lossa Engineering, Stan Chen, John Pangilinan, and Ralph Holguin of RMD Garage to help bring this style of motorcycle culture to Southern California.
One such artisan who has emerged in the last 6 years after leaving his motorcycle repair shop in the NYC and moving to the lucrative Los Angeles market to build and sell his hand-crafted exotics is Max Hazen / Hazen Motorworks. His previous show winning bikes at OG Moto and the LA Calendar Motorcycle Show have included a JAP speedway engine and a Husqvarna dirt bike singles, and a rare Vincent Black Shadow V-twin powered café racers in hand built polished stainless-steel frames. Max hand fabricates nearly every component on his bikes from their suspension, to seats, fuel tanks and controls. And if you have to ask the price, you probably can’t afford it. Hazen’s piece-de-resistance unveiled at this year’s OG Show was a jaw dropping H-D Buell Turbo Streetfighter that intimidated with sheer looks, if not just its perceived performance.
Our tour guide to this year’s show was my beautiful Iron & Lace Motorcycle PinUp Calendar Cover Kitten Sara Balint. Our favorite rides at the Show included Anthony Robinson’s Black Retro Triumph Bar Hopper, the XP Zero Electric Superbike Café Racer, a beautiful old Honda CB160 brushed steel café racer with the most beautiful custom race gas tank, and a SOSA Metalworks 650cc Royal Enfield rigid frame café racer with springer front end. Also on display were a couple of cool roadracing Big Twin Baggers from the MotoAmerica National Roadracing Championship Drag Specialties sponsored Bagger Class.

The Return From A Pandemic
This year’s OG Moto Show was downsized from the previous 2 pre-pandemic Shows, in a new warehouse location on Santa Fe Avenue at 8th Street. The partners and co-founders of the Show are John Pangilinan, Stan Chen, and Ralph Holguin who have backgrounds in the automotive and motorcycle industries.. There were 34 Invited Feature Display Bikes, and about 40 Ride-In Enthusiast Bikes in the Show, plus an indoor craft beer garden and outdoor food trucks with dining tables and chairs in the spectator motorcycle parking lot. Everything a motorhead could want for an enjoyable Saturday afternoon or evening checking out all the cool bikes and hanging with friends and celebrity builders.

Our choice for one of the most beautiful bikes at this year's OG Moto Show was this classic 1960s Honda CB160 with it's brushed steel monocoque frame and very modern looking gas tank.
Fridsy Night VIP Party, Saturay Open to the Public
On Friday night before the Shdow opened to the general public, there was a premium entry VIP Party with the Builders and Promoters that hosted about 400 guests. And then on Saturday when the Show open to the general public 12-noon to 8pm for $20 admission, the promoters provided us a 2,000-person attendance number. At this time in Los Angeles, all attendees at indoor events and large outdoor events are required to show proof of Covid-19 vaccination. There is no way to tell if this may have impacted attendance by the more traditional Harley-Davidson enthusiast crowd who are normally more independent thinking, but California and Southern California does have one of the highest vaccinated populations in the country. Either way, we are happy to have the OG Moto Show back as one of the premier motorcycle events in Southern California and expect it to grow again in the next few years. Moto Yuppies and Millenials in the Time of Covid
Motorcycles as art attracts a diverse crowd of young and midde-aged motorcycle enthusiasts and downtown apartment residents. All attendees were required to show proof of vaccination, though once inside, mask wearing was not inforced though it was an LA County mandate at the time for enclosed events.

This Zero based electric Cafe Racer custom might just be what many of us will be riding in the next 10 years. Love the turbine wheels.
It was great to see so many young women enjoying the show, many even ridden in on bikes. They weren't hereto buy motorcycles and spend money on accessories, but to attend an art exhibit. And that's what it was. From the beautiful hand-made bikes, to the artwork on the walls, to the hand painted murals and graffiti inside and outside the old warehouse buildings, motorized 2-wheel art had arrived in the Big City, and the city dwellers were there to experience it.
