Yamaha
R6 / R1 2002-2003 models You should note that these YEC parts are legal in classes like SBK 600cc World Supersport where increased compression, high performance camshafts and close ratio transmissions are allowed. But in AMA 600cc Supersport racing in America some components are not legal. AMA limits Supersport modifications to a racing exhaust system, fuel injection recalibration, a differnt rear shock and internal front fork modifications, and sprocket gearing changes.
Shown here is the Team Virgin Mobile Aiwa Yamaha YZF-R1 as raced in the highly competitive British Superbike Championship in 2002. The machine is raced by GP500 race winner (Donington, 1998) Simon Crafar and Briton Steve Plater. The first way to
go in setting up any Japanese 600cc SuperSport bike including the R6
/ R1 models is run the best performance exhaust system on the market
which is an Akrapovic for the 600, and an Acrapovic or Graves motorsp[orts
system for the R1.With it you'll need to run a jetting kit or fuel injection
recalibration device avaialble from Yamaha, DynoJet or Factory Tuning
at their recommended settings to match the higher flowing exhaust. Bolting
on a race exhast sytem without rcalibating the fuel injection make actually
make less power than stock. |
For suspension a race quality rear shock from Ohlins, Fox Factory or Penske are the way to go. The new 41mm forks are fully adjustable and have top-out spings to aid adjustability, and probably won't need reworking. But if you feel they do, Lindeman Engineering is the best place to send them. Top factory race teams like Yamaha have enough of a budget they can install Ohlins fork dampening internals in their team's production front forks. Our Paddock Garage Suspension Tuning section will provide you with all the information needed to set up the suspension and handling of your bike. |

Akrapovic is the recommended race exhaust system for Yamaha sportbikes. Akrapovic race systems extensively dyno tested prior to production to achieve the best possible power. They feature expensive to build, but worthwhile performance gains from tapered header pipes, crossover balance tubes on the down pibes, and 4 into 2 into 1 collector tubes for a broader powerband. For more performance, the next step is race cams and higher compression pistons. But you'll need to run race gas with the higher compression pistons, and with the cam change the bike won't be very practical for running on the street. J&E Pistons is a top source for sportbike pistons in America, and Graves Motorsports is your best source for any racing parts andtuning information on the Yamaha R1 models. |
