CB900RR Setup Tips with Kevin Erion
and Rick Hobbs, Erion Racing The actual Team Erion 900RR racebikes sport a lot of big ticket goodies like the $7,000 Ohlins Forks, the Brembo Superbike Brakes and Marchessini magnesium wheels. One of Roberts' actual championship winning 900RRs, possibly the one shown above, was offered in Cycle News for $28,000 at the end of the season. But for most of us, on the street, the stock components work just fine and the now older generation 900RRs will remain a popular leading edge sportbike for many years to come. And most of the tuning suggestions offered here should also aoply to the new 926RR. |

HANDLING IMPROVEMENTS Erion Racing offers revised Triple Clamps for the first generation 900R which increases trail at the front wheel to improve tracking and stability. This is probably the first modification to make to any 1993-'97 model. With the 1998 model 900R Honda revised the stock triple clamps similar to the Erion geometry as original equipment. Erion also offers a recommended revalving serice for the stock 900RR forks which improves front end handling even more. Out back a shock swap is recommended to replace the stock Showa. Erion offers both Ohlins and Fox shocks. Different model Ohlins shocks are available with a wide range of features at various performance levels which are reflected in their higher cost. The one Fox Shox they carry affords the best handling performance improvement for the price. They'ld love to sell you either. Rick says the stock brakes and pads are fine, so just leave them alone. Maybe replace the stock rubber brake lines with Erion Goodrich steel braid lines for better braking feel and you're done! 900RR
POWER IMPROVEMENTS for the Street With the Erion pipe you'll want to include their jetting kit or you won't be able to take advantage of the possible power gains. Rick says the stock airbox and Honda airfilter are fine for any street applications and should be left intact. So what kind of a power gain are we looking a with the pipe and jetting changet? Look for an increase of power and torque throughout the powerband, with peak gain of about 7 hp on top. Rick points out that the stock bike signs off really quickly after reaching peak power, but with the Erion Exhaust System the power band extends out further with the engine able to keep reving towards readline. This makes the powerband much more useable, broader and stronger overall. Rick doesn't like to quote peak horsepower numbers because they change from bike to bike, dyno to dyno and day to day. But he says in stock trim the '93-97 model 900RRs turn from 105-110 hp. The '98-99 models turn 110-115 hp. These are 49 state models, with the CA models typically producing less... The Erion Exhaust System and Jetting Kit will show shows gains across the entire powerband right off idle with a peak gain of 7 hp on top. The only other engine mod recommended by Rick for street riding is a set of Erion Cams. Their stage I cams easily bolt on to the stock cam sprockets without any need for degeeeing and show a gain of 6-7 morehorsepower from 7,000 rpm right on up to readline. ERION

POWER IMPROVEMENTS for the Track 600
SUPERSPORT CBR600F4 "Everybody's convinced the jetting in ourF4 Supersport bikes is different than what we sell," explains Rick, "but it's not. Since we only do Honda's, our jetting kits tend to be really close to what's needed." With an Erion Exhaust System and Jetting Kit, Rick says the Erion F4s pick up from 10 to 12 hp. In the handling department Erion recommends straight rate springs in the front forks with a little revalving, and possibly an Ohlins shock in the back. Brakes, of course, are left stock for Supersport with just an upgrade to Erion Goodrich braided brake lines. Everything else is up to you, the rider.
