Samueal Kao JSK Custom Design BMW R Nine-T
photography by By Jim Gianatsis
BMW introduced the new model R Nine-T in 2013 as their low cost entry level Boxer R 90 twin cylinder engined entry level street bike that could easily be personalized by the owner with a long list of options for changing the bikes looks, theme and function. Essentially it was a factory custom, which custom bike builder s were invited to customize it even further. Los Angeles based custom builder Samuel Kao with won his Class at the the 2014 LA Calendar Motorcycle Show with a Harley Sportser turned into a serious Sportbike, looked to set his own mark on one of these new BMW R Nine-T for the 2015 Calendar Bike Show.
Sam's vision was to turn his Nine-T into a trendy knobby dirt tire shod Cafe Racer Bobber with a less-is-more theme. As you can see, compared to the stock BMW Nine-T picture included here,
San began by removing a lot of the body panels around the engine, exposing the air cleaner elements, and fabricating his own twin high-pipe exhaust system/ Another unique feature was relocating the frame mounted oil cooler
to in front of the front fork triple clamps and hiding it behind a drilled front number plate containing two Projector Headlights. The gas tank and custom rear seat tail fairing were painted in White with a Red / Dark Blue / Light Blue color theme in tribute to BMW's iconic Martini sponsored race cars.
Sam was in a rush to get the bike completed in time for the 2015 Calendar Bike Show, so it wasn't finished as well as he would have liked with it's details and with the paint,
but It still took 2nd Place in the Pro Builder Class. A few of the details which held it back were the awkwardly mount used / faded yellow brake and clutch reservoirs for the hand control lever,
and a pair of flimsy BMX Carbon Fibre handlebars that looked just wrong and possibly unsafe on such a beefy sportbike. That and the Martini Racing paint theme need to be better designed
and executed.
But Sam Kao's Nine-T is still one very cool looking bike, especially parked next to beautiful Fast Dates SBK World Superbike Calendar Kitten Sara Horvath.
