Ron Baldonado Retro Board Track Winner One exciting bike in contention for Best of Show at the 2013 LA Calendar Show's Calendar Bike Building Championship was former 2011 Bobber Class winner Ron Baldonado / Rock Bottom Customs, Thousand Oaks, CA with a brand new ground up new retro custom fabrication of a 1920's styleboard tracker racer that took 1st Place in the Classic American Class. "I build my bikes specifically to premier and win at the LA Calendar Motorcycle Show each year", Ron told us. "The frame is a 1930 Harley VL design, mated to a 1920 Girder style front end, rolling early on 1923 Harley JD wheels. The front headlight lantern houses a modern carbonate bulb, the grips are wooden as from bicycles in the 1900's, and the saddle comes from an 1800's blacksmith shop where he sat at his grinding stone." Other components on the build includes 1923 Harley JD model wheels and tires, a 1930 Harley VL style frame, and Ron's own hand fabricated exhaust system. The most uniwue part on the bike which we failed to realise, until Ron pointed it out to us, was his unique hand-made fuel tank. which is actually divived in half inside, to also serve as the sump tank for the engine's oiling system. You now rralize why their are two separate filler caps on the top of the frame ung tank, with one filler for fuel adn the other for oil. We don't know how practical or safe it is having hot oil held in such cole proximity to the gasoline, byr for a unique show bike that won't be ridden much, it sure cleans up and simplifies the bike's design without having to have a separate oil tank under the seat.
