Roland Sands "The Glory Stomper "
2007 Iron & Lace Calendar Bike
by Jim Gianatsis

Roland Sands is the son of Perry and Nancy Sands, founders of Performance Machine, probably the world's largest manufacturer of aftermarket wheels, brake and control systems for the custom motorcycle market. A former AMA National roadracing champion in the 250cc GP class, Roland in his mid '20s went to work full time in 2001 in the Prototype and Development Department at Performance Machine. Much of Rolands time was devoted to building project bikes using PM components for trade show use and magazine features. Roland soon became addicted to building custom bikes (obviously with a performance theme because of his racing background) and the custom bike scene, so much so that he really wasn't interested in running his parent's million dollar company when they were ready to retire. So in 2005 his parents sold Performance Machine to the MAG Group which owns many other well known motorcycle companies, and Roland started up his own custom bike building company called "Roland Sands". For the time being, Perry and Nancy are still managing directors at PM, and Roland is still working out of the PM product development shop.

"The Glory Stomper" shown here, is one of 2 major custom bikes which Roland built for the 2005 Show season for Performance Machine and his own PR use, the other being Moca Java". Jim Gianatsis photographed both bikes for the 2007 Iron & lace Calendar with beautiful little school girl looking red haired Playboy Playmate for April 2002, Heather Caroline.

Glory Stomper was designed by Roland in the fun new "Bar Hopper" style with a retro board track racer look using the latest roadracing suspension components from Ohlins. The focal point is the origional design gas tank with matching seat and rear fender assembly, and the unique steel tube softail fame and swingarm painted to look like polished aluminum. The polished aluminum finned "sump cover' on top of the burgundy metalic painted gas tank is another unique feature. The bike features, of course, PM controls, wheels, and their new radial 4-piston front brake caliper.
