Zero
Engineering The winning Performance Machine Best of Show bike at our 2004 LA Calendar Motorcycle Show went to Shinya Kimura, owner of Zero Engineering of Japan, who flew over from Japan just for our Show. It was Shinya who pioneered some 10-15 years ago the current retro chopper look that other top builders like Don Chica of Chica Custom Cycles in Los Angeles, another of our favorite Iron & Lace calendar builders, have helped make so popular here in America. Fans now have to wait in line up to 4 years to buy one of his bikes. Zero Engineering now has a branch shop in Las Vegas, NV, and you can find Zero on the web at www.ZeroChop.com. We awarded Shinya the Best of Show Trophy, in part as a tribute to Shinya unique building style which has established its own unique niche in the custom bike building world. We liked the Show winner's hand fabricated rigid frame with its sheet metal steering head, and the rough retro hot rod naked sportbike look. We would have preferred the bike was fully retro with old school wire wheels and drum brakes to complete the look, but among a sea of beautiful me-to customs, it was the Zero bike which drew the fans and really stood out at our 2004 Show. I later photographed the winner back at the Queen Mary for the 2006 iron & Lace Calendar with Calendar Angel and Miss Texas, Miss Hawaiian Tropic International, Miss Harley-Davidson and 2005 Bike Show hostess "Rockin' Robin" Cunningham for the advertising campaign for our 2005 Calendar Bike Show.
