Above: The Grand Hotel Pianeta Maratea Resort Hotel was like a 5- star hotel in Monte Carlo or Paris, but many times larger. All the floors are coved in rich Italian marble, the bar room was in rich red Mahogany wood. It had an Olympic size swimming pool with painted lanes for competition, plus professional tennis courts. Surprisingly, the huge hotel was fully staffed, but void of any other guests in early May before tourist season re- ally began. It was just our group of 12 riders on the Edelweiss tour, plus our two guides. We had dinner together at a grand table in the formal dining room, with 6 waiters serving just us and attending to everything.
