Shooting the 2010
Iron & Lace Calendar

By Jim Gianatsis

The year 2008 was a very interesting, if not difficult year for shooting the 2010 Iron & Lace Calendar and for the custom bike market in general.

All the hype created my popular bike building TV show's like Monster Garage, Biker Build Off, Orange County Choppers which had run their course was over. The new riders and builders who came into the sport, bought or built a custom bike, and then realized function doesn't follow form, were now gone. The custom bike boom was over, and the down turn in the American economy didn't help. Many custom bike and parts companies and builders went bust. Attendance at all bike events across america dropped by almost half and the sport returned to its base core of enthusiast from back in the 1990s.

At our 2008 LA Calendar Motorcycle Show we still found incredible customs to shoot for this year's Calendar including Best of Show from Jim Guiffra / AFT Customs, and Ken's Custom Cycle who came all the way from Japan to compete and take home1st place Pro Builder . Ken's bike got the cover of the 2010 Calendar over Jim Guiffra only because brunette model Sabella was still in make-up when we photographed Jim's bike first with blond Rachel. Later when we shot Ken's bike with both of the girls together, we knew that had to be a cover!

A few months later I arranged another Iron & Lace shoot in with a Playboy Playmate in grimy downtown Los Angles at a famous filming location under the 9th Street bridge. But the model got lost, then was too afraid to get out of her car to look for us and the bikes and builders just a few yards away from where she had stopped, then she drove away. So I still photographed the bikes without a model so not to waste the day, thinking i'd later ad the missing model some how.

And now with the shortage of top name builders left in Los Angles, I found still 3 bikes short to finish off the 2010 Calendar. What to do? Well, I did have digital studio photos available of tall the top winning bikes from the recent 2008 AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building in Sturgis, so i choose the top 3 bikes from there as well. So this year we really can claim the Iron & Lace Calendar dos feature the world's top custom bikes - both from the LA Calendar Show and the AMD World Championship!

The only problem was we now had 8 incredible custom bikes photographed, but without models! But I did have Rachel and Sabella, along with Athena, Cora and sexy adult film star Jayme Langform photographed in my white seamless studio. So for 2010 there are 8 pictures in the Calendar where the models have been Photo shopped in place with the bikes..... can you spot which ones they are?

I'll also tell you now, although no one has ever noticed it, I also Photoshoped in 1 model/bike photo in each of the last 2 years Iron & Lace Calendars. - Jim Gianatsis

The Models:
• This year we had 4 beautiful new model discoveries for the 2010 Iron & Lace Calendar, who we also featured in our other calendars Fast Dates and Garage Girls.

Rachel Bernstein is a university BA graduate who now works both as a professional model and make-up artist. Joining Rachel on the covers of both Iron & Lace and garage girls is Sabella Shake who is also attending university and is majoring in Law!

We've also got 2 very sexy redheads in this year's Calendar, veteran runway and fashion model Apple Price who is also a very talented artist. And teen adult model and video star Jayme Langford who is also a Hustler Honey centerfold!

And we have back 2 veteran Calendar Kittens for from last year, the beautiful Tiffany Toth and Cora Skinner.

The weekend features many of the world's top Pro and Amateur street bike builders in attendance to compete in the Performance Machine Calendar Show Bike Building Championship with a bulging purse of $86,000 in cash and awards. There are 10 individual classes for American V-Twin and Metric Street Custom, Performance, Classic, Bobber, Chopper and Sportbike motorcycles The coveted Performance Machine Best of Show Trophy is awarded for the top overall bike at the Show and includes a $3,000 cash prize, an additional $7,000 in product awards bringing the total awards to $10,000 overall, plus the winning bike and builder receives an editorial bike feature in Iron Works magazine and the Iron & Lace Calendar photographed by Show producer Jim Gianatsis.

Taking home the coveted Best of Show award for the first time ever at a major Show was an incredible metric custom from builder Jim Giuffra / AFTcustoms.com. Named “Er Head” for it’s air-cooled Yamaha XVS engine fed by a Mikuni HSR carb, the bike features a specially modified Yamaha/Redneck Engineering/ AFT Customs oil-in frame with RMD billet girder front forks, and a single shock rear suspension. Assisting Jim with the construction of the top bike was his assistant Ron Abel, and AFT Model Agency girls Kylie and Elaina.

Best of Show came from the premier Iron Works magazine sponsored Radical Pro Builder class, which again this year was extremely competitive, with 1st Place trophy gong to Japanese builder Kenji Nagal from Ken’s Factory (Kens-Factory.com) who flew in just for the Calendar Bike Building Championship with his blown V-Twin powered polished aluminum custom from Nagoya City, Japan. Taking 1st and 2nd runner-up spots among many many incredible all-new machines premiering at the Show were Todd Silicato, and last year’s Best of Show winner Greg Westbury of Westbury Hardcore.

Todd Silicato picked up a really big $5,000 Award Certificate from Ted Sands, Kari Kimmel and the Calendar Kittens for the Best PM Equipped Bike at the Show. Todd also taught Calendar Bike Buiding Seminars both days of the Show.

Performance Machine also offers is own trophy for the Best Performance Machine Equipped Bike with a $5,000 product award from Performance Machine products going to Todd Silicato from Todd’s Custom Cycles for one of his bikes. Other favorite classes include the Iron Works magazine sponsored Radical Pro Builder which went to Japanese builder , the Mikuni American HR Carburetor sponsored American V-Twin Performance, and the Fast Dates Calendar sponsored Sportbike Class.
