Caitlin and I discuss the finer points of Orwell’s "Animal Farm." I think he demonstrates the danger and fallacy behind man’s imperfect will to lead and actual ability when push comes to shove. Caitlin wants to know why Ice Cream is cold and what makes clouds fly. Also a strong argument.

Girls that Kick Ass: Teen Detective
Kristen Bell

Veronica Mars Kicks Ass in Hgh School - Wednesdays 9/8C on UPN

Cute high school girl-next-door Kristen Bell plays "Veronica Mars" in the excitedly fun TV detective drama of the same name. Veronica is a contemporary cross between teen detective Nancy Drew and Jim Rockford (The Rockford Files TV series of the '70s and early' 80s ) who can't but help her school classmates, their families or her dad who are caught in problems that need solving.

Like James Garner who started in the popular Rockford Files TV detective series, Veronica's dad is a former police detective, now on the outs with the force and trying to make ends meet as a private detective while raisng his daughter (her mom ran away for reasons we are still learning) . Veronica does secretarial work in her dad's low rent office after school to help him out, but dad is sometimes a little too textbook when it comes to solving each week's new crime or finding a missing person, and Veronica's always there to help him out with her own sneaky tactics and network of teen friends.

What's really cool about Veronica (and Kristen Bell) is that she's not the hot homecoming queen or the popular girl in school. The cool kids all dispise her, at least until they really need her help. Veronica is oh-so-cute without flaunting it, until she needs to employ hergood looks fora particualr detective job like planting a bug in a rap artists hotel room, or getting past a night club bouncer. She has a sharp mind and a quick, often offering up a quick comeback quip when needed. There's nothing not to like about Veronica. Cool, sexy and smart in ther guise of the girl next door.

Each week on Veronica Mars there's a new crime or problem to solve like all the other popular cop shows from CSI to Without A Trace, but the crimes are usually more teenage problems that end up being solved by Veronica with a good moral resolution as well, sort of like Party of Five and Joan of Arcadia. And like those top rated Shows, Veronica Mars has another continuing story line from week to week. This one involves Veronica's best girlfriend in school being killed the year before, the dead girlfriend's brother was Veronica's boyfriend at the time and a prime suspect in the case. Veronica's father was the investigating police officier on the case which cost him his job, and the career change to private detective just like a James Rockford (The Rockford Files on TV in the '70s staring James Garner). The ongoing plot is realy thick and Veronica only magages to unravel small bits of it from week to week while solving the current week's other case.

Veronica Mars is definetly one of the most well written and well acted dramas on TV these days. It's a jewel hidden away on the UPN network, so it isn't as well known as the other more popular shows on the Big Three Networks. We had to subscribe to our local channel package on Direct TV to get Veronica Mars (plus America's next top Model) , but for a few extra bucks a month it's worth it.

Kristen Bell as Veronica Mars

A Modern Day Nancy Drew
heats up UPN Television, Tuesdays 9/8C

In the wealthy, seaside community of Neptune, the rich and powerful make the rules, they own the town and the high school, and desperately try to keep their dirty little secrets just that…secret. Unfortunately for them, there's Veronica Mars, a smart, fearless 17-year-old apprentice private investigator dedicated to solving the town's toughest mysteries.

Veronica (Kristen Bell) actually used to be one of the popular girls, walking the halls of Neptune High with the rest of the "beautiful people." But it all came crumbling down around her after her best friend Lilly was murdered and her then-Sheriff father Keith Mars (Enrico Colantoni) was removed from office for naming Lilly's billionaire father, Jake Kane, as the lead suspect.

During the day, Veronica must negotiate high school like any average teenage girl. At night, Veronica helps with her father's struggling, new private investigator business, sneaking through back alleys and scoping out no-tell motels with a telescopic-lens camera and her math book in an attempt to uncover the California beach town's darkest secrets.

But it all came crumbling down around her after her best friend Lilly was murdered and her then-Sheriff father Keith Mars (Enrico Colantoni) was removed from office for naming Lilly's billionaire father, Jake Kane, as the lead suspect. After Jake was exonerated, the scandal cost Keith his job, his home and wife, and Veronica was ostracized by her popular friends, including her boyfriend Duncan Kane (Teddy Dunn), Lilly's brother.

During the day, Veronica must negotiate high school like any average teenage girl. Along with fellow outcast, sophomore Wallace Fennel (Percy Daggs III), she bravely maneuvers her classes, wary of former in-crowd friends, like Duncan and his best friend Logan Echolls (Jason Dohring), and edgy outsiders, like Weevil (Francis Capra) and his P.C.H. Biker Club boys.

At night, Veronica helps with her father's struggling, new private investigator business, sneaking through back alleys and scoping out no-tell motels with a telescopic-lens camera and her math book in an attempt to uncover the California beach town's darkest secrets.

Pushed to the edge of this multicultural, venomous little Peyton Place, Veronica Mars relentlessly continues to search for evidence that will clear her father's name and get her back into the "in-crowd," but what she finds may tear the town of Neptune apart at the seams.

KRISTEN BELL
a career actress with long list of credits before Veronica Mars
A native of Detroit, Kristen Bell attended New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. While in New York City,

Bell was cast in the role of Susanna Walcott in the Broadway revival of Arthur Miller's "The Crucible", starring Liam Neeson and Laura Linney. Bell's other stage credits include playing Becky in a Broadway production of "Tom Sawyer".

She also appeared in "Hair" and in the title role in the musical comedy "Sneaux", by the creative team that produced the award-winning off-Broadway hit "Reefer Madness", in which she also starred.

Bell was the lead in the telefilm "Gracie's Choice", opposite Anne Heche and Diane Ladd, and had a leading role in "The King and Queen of Moonlight Bay", opposite Tim Matheson. Last year, Bell starred opposite Val Kilmer in David Mamet's film "Spartan".

Bell guest starred in two episodes as the young con artist Flora on HBO's hit "Deadwood", the series from the creator of "NYPD Blue", David Milch. She has guest starred on such shows as "American Dreams", "Everwood" and "The Shield". She recently wrapped shooting on the cable version of "Reefer Madness", which also stars Alan Cumming, Neve Campbell and Ana Gasteyer. Bell is appearing in "A Little Night Music" at the Los Angeles Opera, directed by Scott Ellis and choreographed by Susan Stroman.

For some actors, success just seems to come naturally. In the case of talented stage and screen beauty Kristen Bell, it wasn't so much a matter of if she was going to be a star after realizing her dream during an early performance as a banana in Raggedy Ann and Andy at the tender age of 12 -- but when she would finally make the big time.

Paralyzed with stage fright as she waited for her cue off-stage, Bell was offered a word of encouragement by her supportive mother that would ultimately give her the drive to realize her life's calling.

A native of Detroit whose early stage experiences eventually led her to study at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, Bell saw her early dreams of on-stage success begin to come true when she was chosen to portray Becky Thatcher in a Broadway production of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer shortly after arriving in the Big Apple.

Realizing that she had what it took to find success onscreen as well as on-stage, Bell was soon packing her bags for Los Angeles and landing small supporting roles in such features as Polish Wedding and Pootie Tang. She returned briefly to Broadway for a role in the 2002 revival of The Crucible, playing alongside well-known stage and screen actors Liam Neeson and Laura Linney. In 2003,

Bell impressed television viewers with a solid performance in the made-for-television drama The King and Queen of Moonlight Bay before moving on to essay the unforgettable role of a young girl struggling to raise her three stepbrothers after their drug-addicted mother is sent to jail in Gracie's Choice.

If television had offered Bell her most successful roles to this point in her career, the magnetic young screen presence still had feature aspirations, as evidenced by her involvement in David Mamet's 2004 thriller Spartan. Of course,

Bell wasn't about to turn her back on the small screen just yet, and following appearances on such popular series as Everwood and Deadwood, she took the lead as a sort-of new-millennium Nancy Drew on UPN's Veronica Mars.

If that, combined with a lively performance in the Showtime musical spoof Reefer Madness, wasn't enough to make young Bell a household name, subsequent performances in the college comedy Fifty Pills and the thriller Deepwater would at least serve to expand her feature-film resumé. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

2/2005 - On stage, Bell can currently be seen in "A Little Night Music" at the Los Angeles Opera. Previously, she starred in the Broadway revival of Arthur Miller's "The Crucible," with Liam Neeson and Laura Linney, the Broadway production of "Tom Sawyer," and played the title role in the world premiere of the musical "Sneaux."

Bell currently lives in Los Angeles.
